The ‘You Should Know’ Box - P.erformance

Today at School, I was talking to a fellow teacher about the need for us to have better context of everyone’s invisible realities to better understand how our individual or shared situations might be affecting our responsibilities in terms of students handing work in on time. She suggested an anonymous way of having students share what’s going on with their other classes. Personally, I would prefer that students just have a conversation with me directly so I can help support them, but that misses the point. ALL students should be able to express context for their present situation and how it may be affecting their performance in school and ALL students may not feel comfortable having that conversation.

This led me to think into a broader context. What would happen if organizations (not just schools) had a form (digital survey) that someone could fill in at anytime to share with colleagues anonymously or using their name some individual situations that affecting their performance.

How would knowing what people are struggling with affect the way people in that organization communicate and engage in conversations about performance over time.

I am going to implement this in my class in terms of a A physical ‘You Should Know’ box. I might create a form. I will update this post and keep you posted.

Do you have a similar practice in your organization? if not, what impact might implementing one have ?
